Uttaranchal is composed of two words "uttar"
meaning "north" and "aanchal"
meaning "blessings." Uttaranchal is broadly
divided into two zones Kumaon and
Garhwal. Earlier known as "Devbhumi"
meaning "the land of god," Uttaranchal
also nourishes a diverse and rich culture and monuments
of historical importance.
Uttranchal extends from 28º 43' N to 31º
27' N longitude and 77º 34' East to 81º
02' E latitude. Uttaranchal is surrounding by Nepal
in the East, China in the North, Himachal Pradesh
in the west and U.P. in the South.
Uttranchal consists of 13 districts (7 in
Garhwal and 6 in Kumaon)
Garhwal Districts : Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Pauri,
Tehri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Haridwar.
Kumaon Districts: Nainital, Pithoragarh, Champawat,
Almora, Udham Singh Nagar, and Bageshwar.
Area: 53484 sq kms - 18th largest state
East-West run - 358 kms,
North-South run - 320 kms
Kumaoni and Garhwali
are the respective bolis of Kumaon and Garhwal
widely used in day to day communication by the pople
living therein. It's widely spoken in villages and
small towns. However the city culture has to much
extent swallowed up Kumaoni and Garhwali, and the
people prefer to use Hindi instead.
